lung transplant Restores Retiree’s Life After Years Battling Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
USA: Steve, a retired man who enjoyed golf, yard work and daily walks, suddenly developed chest pain and shortness of breath in April 2020. What began as an alarming episode quickly led to a diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive lung disease that impaired his ability to oxygenate for four years. Treatments and medications followed, but by June 2024 his condition had deteriorated to the point that he urgently needed a lung transplant.
Clinical staff weighed age, coexisting medical conditions and social supports when assessing transplant candidacy, according to the transplant clinic medical director at UK, Dr. Noreen Rula. Those factors, and the team’s evaluation, determined Steve was an appropriate candidate and he was placed on the pathway toward surgery. The case highlights how careful selection and multidisciplinary assessment are part of preparing patients for major organ transplantation.
Steve received his lung transplant on September 18, 2024. Following the operation, a period of intensive medical care and physical therapy enabled him to regain strength and lung function. With the support of his medical team and family, he achieved a personal milestone: hiking with his family in Jackson Hole. He marked that moment by taking a photograph and presenting it to Dr. Rula and the transplant staff as a gesture of thanks.
Throughout his recovery Steve and his clinicians acknowledged the contribution of donor families whose decisions made the transplant possible. He continues to seek ways to honor that gift and recently took part in the Second Chance at Life golf scramble. The story centers on the lung transplant as the pivotal intervention that returned mobility and meaningful time with loved ones to a man who had faced a shrinking world of activity.
