Rare Quadruple Transplant Replaces Both Lungs, kidney And liver In 36-Hour Surgery

USA: Jasmine Jones, a 28-year-old woman from Chicago’s South Side who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at five months of age, underwent a quadruple organ transplantation in January at the University of Chicago. Surgeons replaced her right and left lungs, kidney and liver in a single 36-hour operation, the first procedure of its kind in Illinois and only the sixth such transplant reported in the United States.

Doctors had warned Jones that her progressive genetic disease could severely damage multiple organs and that a combined approach might be necessary. The decision to proceed with simultaneous replacement of four organs reflected both the severity of her condition and the technical ambition of the surgical team at the University of Chicago.

Jones did not fully grasp how rare the procedure was until months after the operation. Five months post-transplant she reports feeling well and has experienced positive early outcomes, according to accounts of her recovery. The immediate focus for clinicians remains careful monitoring of graft function and rehabilitation after an extensive, high-risk intervention.

The case underscores rapidly advancing capabilities in transplant surgery and poses new questions about patient selection, organ procurement logistics and long-term management after multi-organ transplantation. For the University of Chicago and the broader transplant community, the operation marks a milestone that will be tracked as teams evaluate durability and quality-of-life outcomes in the months and years ahead.
