Belmont Cameli Helped Launch Seven-Way kidney Exchange After Incompatible Donor Match

WORLD NEWS – ARGENTINA: Belmont Cameli, the actor who played Red on the series Off Campus, is the central figure in a remarkable kidney transplant story that emerged years before the show amplified his public profile. When Cameli, then 20, offered a kidney to his longtime friend Brendan, routine testing showed they were biologically incompatible, putting the planned transplantation at risk.

Doctors immediately enrolled both men in a paired kidney exchange program, a coordinated chain in which donors give to compatible recipients they do not know. The chain expanded to involve 14 people and ultimately enabled seven patients to receive life-changing kidney transplants. Brendan, who had been waiting for six years, was among those who received a transplant through the exchange.

The chain also connected donors to other recipients: one donor’s kidney went to a woman identified as Clotil de Ruiz, and the woman’s daughter in turn became a donor for another patient, illustrating how paired exchanges multiply chances for matches. In a 2018 Instagram post following the operation, Cameli reflected on participating in the exchange and used the platform to encourage organ donation and awareness without naming institutions.

Medical experts say paired kidney exchanges are a proven strategy to increase transplantation rates and reduce waiting times, especially for young living donors whose intended recipients are incompatible. Cameli’s story underscores how individual willingness to donate, combined with programmatic coordination, can convert a failed direct match into multiple successful transplantations.
