New England Donor Services Achieves Record-Setting 1,570 Organ Transplants in 2024

New England Donor Services has achieved a historic milestone in organ donations, with a record number of 648 donors facilitating 1,570 transplants within a single year, marking an 80% surge since 2020. This remarkable achievement underscores the pressing demand for organ transplants in the region, as well as the robust community spirit that drives individuals to offer the ultimate gift of life. Alexandra Glazer, the president and CEO of New England Donor Services, advocates for more people to consider registering as donors, highlighting the profound ripple effect one donor can have—potentially saving up to eight lives and aiding countless others through tissue donations.

A poignant story illustrating the life-altering power of organ donation is that of Elizabeth Gorman, a resident of Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017, Gorman’s battle with the disease severely compromised her lung function, tethering her to an oxygen tank and confining her to her home. The cancer’s toll on her lungs was so extensive that a double lung transplant became imperative for her survival and quality of life. For five arduous years, Gorman awaited the opportunity to be eligible for such a transformation.

Despite the difficulties, Gorman received unwavering support from her medical team, family, and New England Donor Services, which bolstered her spirits through the grueling wait. These healthcare professionals’ compassion and expertise made a profound impact on her journey, treating her as a whole person rather than a mere statistic. On February 14, 2023, Gorman was added to the transplant list, and by August 25 of the same year, she received her new lungs, a moment she describes as an overwhelming gift for which she feels endless gratitude.

Gorman’s story, along with the increasing trend in organ donations, amplifies the importance of enrolling as an organ donor, especially for New England residents. It is a simple yet significant decision, easily facilitated through the online registry or in person at the motor vehicle office, that could be the lifeline others desperately await.
