Folly Beach is preparing to host its 20th annual Race for Life event, which raises money and awareness for organ donation. George Sawyer, who has a personal connection to the cause, has been participating in the race for the past 18 years. Sawyer and his family missed only the event’s first two years simply because they were unaware of its existence at that time.
Sawyer’s involvement stems from the tragic loss of his son, Patrick, who died in an accident in 1987 at the age of 12 while on his way to school. Sawyer said that during that period, organ donation was still considered experimental. However, through his work with the Red Cross, he understood that organ and tissue donations were saving lives. After Patrick’s accident, Sawyer insisted that his son’s organs and tissues be donated, believing they could help save other lives.
For the past 18 years, the Sawyer family has participated in the Race for Life, using the event to share Patrick’s story and raise awareness about organ donation. This year, eight members of the Sawyer family will be taking part in the event. Sawyer says one of the aspects they most look forward to is the camaraderie the race provides.
The Race for Life will begin tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. at Folly Beach.
