UVA Health Displays Hundreds Of Blue Pinwheels To Highlight Organ Donation And Transplant Need
USA: Outside UVA Health, hundreds of blue pinwheels turned in a public display this week meant to honor organ and tissue donors, recognize recipients and their families, and draw attention to the scale of need for transplantation. The visual installation framed the medical centerβs transplant work as both a community story and a clinical mission.
UVA Healthβs Transplant Center has performed more than 7,500 transplants, a milestone officials say has given thousands a second chance. Amy Schmidt Morris, senior advisor for special projects at UVA Health, described the display as a moment to pause and reflect on the countless lives touched by donation and transplantation and urged continued public engagement.
Health leaders reiterated the national urgency: more than 100,000 people across the United States are waiting for a transplant. Organ and tissue donation supports a wide range of care, from kidney and heart transplantation to tissue gifts that help orthopedic patients and those needing heart valves, all enabled by coordinated procurement and clinical teams.
The pinwheel display also served as a reminder that registering as a donor and learning about the donation process can directly affect transplant outcomes. UVA Health pointed to resources on its website for people who want to learn more about registering, donation options, and how transplantation services operate at the hospital.
