March Dress Giveaway in Watertown Boosts Organ Donation Awareness with Hundreds of Brand-New Gowns

The annual dress giveaway, a unique fundraising initiative supporting organ donation, is set to return in March for its third consecutive year. Conceived in memory of Lucy, who passed away six years ago, the event was initiated by Laura Ref and supported by Bella Bridal. Lucy had recently purchased her wedding gown from Bella Bridal, and after learning about Laura’s loss, Kelly Shanahan from the store reached out with an idea. They decided to utilize hundreds of surplus gowns to develop an event that not only honors Lucy’s memory but also raises awareness and funds for organ donation.

This event offers a wide variety of brand new gowns, ranging from weddings and proms to military balls and other formal occasions. The dresses, mostly with tags still on, are available for attendees to take home in exchange for donations. The funds are directed to Team Fingerlakes, part of the Fingerlake Donor Recovery Network, which spans 22 counties from St. Lawrence down to Pennsylvania. This organization plays a pivotal role in coordinating organ transplants and supports donor families and recipients through various programs.

Apart from raising funds, the initiative is closely tied to the Transplant Games, a biennial event where organ recipients participate in Olympic-style competitions. These games provide an opportunity for donor families to honor their loved ones and celebrate the lives that organ donations have saved. The dress giveaway itself will take place on March 8th at 8 Public Square in Watertown, with a follow-up event scheduled for March 22nd in Syracuse. Generous support from individuals like Red Schwitzer and the Neighbors of Watertown has helped secure the venue for this impactful event.

Contributions to the cause can be made not only through financial donations but also by providing new or never-worn dresses and accessories. Over the past two years, the initiative has raised amounts ranging from $4,000 to $7,000, and expectations are high for even greater success this year. With 700 gowns already accounted for, the support from local bridal shops continues to grow, underscoring the community’s commitment to this noble cause.
