Mother Celebrates Young Son’s Life After Infant liver transplant From Donor Family

USA: A North Carolina mother is marking Mother’s Day after her youngest son survived life-threatening liver failure thanks to a transplant when he was an infant. Corbin Baker, now four, was placed on a transplant list at five months old and has since recovered enough to play, attend daycare, and live an active childhood.

Corbin was born with two rare conditions — biliary atresia and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency — that caused severe nutritional problems, inflammation, and progressive liver failure. As he awaited surgery, a grieving family chose to authorize organ donation. That decision, and the subsequent organ procurement, enabled a timely liver transplantation that clinicians determined was essential to his survival.

The family credits the North Carolina organ donation organization Honor Bridge for support through the process. Honor Bridge displays recipients and donor families on an honor wall at its Chapel Hill facility, where Corbin’s photo now hangs as a permanent tribute to both the donor family and the life-saving work of transplantation teams.

The experience has turned Corbin’s mother, Lindsay Westonorf, into an advocate for donor registration. She urged others to consider donation after recently losing her own father to strokes; he was not a transplant candidate, but the family met with Honor Bridge to make end-of-life decisions. Those moved to register can do so at the DMV or through Honor Bridge’s website, a step loved ones say can bring life to others.
