Young Donor’s Organs Enable Multiple Transplants Across Romania And Italy

WORLD NEWS – ROMANIA: A 27-year-old’s passing and the family’s consent to organ procurement has provided lifesaving transplantation opportunities for recipients in Romania and Italy, hospital officials said. The operation in Iași marked the fifth organ procurement at the city’s centers this year and mobilized teams across the country and abroad.

A liver transplantation procedure took place at Spitalul Sfântul Spiridon in Iași, where surgeons performed a split to allow a segment to remain for an adult recipient and a portion to be transported. A Bucharest team led by Professor Brașoveanu escorted the liver segment to Spitalul Grigore Alexandrescu for transplantation into a child.

The donor heart was accepted by a surgical team from Bari, Italy, after no compatible recipient was identified within Romania. Kidneys were transplanted at Spitalul Parhon in Iași. corneal tissue was recovered at Sfântul Spiridon, and a specialized team from the Colentina Hospital tissue bank in Bucharest retrieved osteotendinous tissue for grafting. Lungs could not be procured in this case.

Clinicians involved expressed deep gratitude to the donor’s family for authorizing organ and tissue donation amid their loss, and reiterated the ongoing need for donors whose organs and tissues can benefit multiple patients. Hospitals emphasized that coordinated procurement and rapid multidisciplinary work are essential to successful transplantation and saving lives.
