Indiana Family Honors Man Who Saved Five Lives Through Organ And Tissue Donation

USA: In April, Indiana observed Donate Life Month and the family of Terre Haute resident Trevor Scamahorn used the recognition to spotlight a rare legacy of lifesaving transplantation. Scamahorn passed away unexpectedly in August 2021 at age 50, and his decision to donate organs and tissues resulted in five organ transplants and tissue gifts that helped dozens more.

Trevor’s heart, lungs, liver and kidneys went to multiple recipients, and his tissue donations extended healing to many patients. The family has maintained contact with at least one heart transplant recipient, a connection that has underscored for them the tangible, long-term impact of organ procurement and transplantation on everyday lives and families.

Support from the Indiana Donor Network guided the Scamahorn family through the immediate loss and the months that followed. Motivated by that experience, Trevor’s daughter Shelby joined the organization as a family advocate three years ago, seeking to meet grieving families where they are and to help others navigate the choices she and her family once faced.

Family members say Trevor was widely known as an outgoing friend, and they take comfort in the knowledge that his choice to donate created renewed time and hope for recipients and their loved ones. They say honoring his decision has turned personal tragedy into purpose and a continued commitment to promote transplantation and donation across Indiana.
