COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA, USA: A remarkable journey of resilience and hope is unfolding in the Midlands as 12-year-old Skyler Brown becomes the first pediatric patient in South Carolina to undergo a double transplant of the heart and kidney. This groundbreaking medical achievement came after Skyler faced severe health challenges, including dilated cardiomyopathy, which left her heart enlarged and barely functioning.

Skyler’s troubles began during her winter break in December 2023 when she battled the flu and pneumonia, only to discover troubling symptoms like swollen feet afterward. Following referrals and tests, doctors at Prisma Health children’s Hospital diagnosed her condition and initiated treatment at MUSC Shaun Jenkins children’s Hospital. However, as her heart condition worsened, it began affecting her kidneys, ultimately necessitating both organs’ replacement.

Months of waiting culminated in November 2024, when a donor provided matching heart and kidney organs, a logistical and medical challenge successfully executed by coordinated teams at MUSC. The surgeries required 10 hours for the heart and an additional 6 for the kidney and resulted in full success. Skyler’s experience highlights the crucial role of organ donation in saving lives and the power of hope amid challenges.

Today, Skyler is back in school and even back on horseback, emphasizing the significance of this miracle in her life. She expresses gratitude for her second chance and hopes to meet her donor family to thank them personally. Skyler’s story not only marks a monumental achievement in medical history but also serves as an inspiration for countless others awaiting life-saving transplants.
