Toronto Man Gains Undetectable HIV Status After bone marrow Transplant For Leukemia
WORLD NEWS – CANADA: A Toronto man has joined a rare group of patients in whom HIV is no longer detectable after receiving a bone marrow transplantation to treat leukemia, doctors at University Health Network, Unity Health Toronto and the University of Toronto said. Medical teams report the outcome follows the replacement of the patient’s immune system through the transplant.
The man required a bone marrow transplant for an underlying cancer, triggering a global search of donor registries to find the best match. Clinicians selected a donor whose cells carried a special mutated protein resistant to HIV. After the transplant, the patient’s original immune system was eliminated and replaced by donor-derived immunity, and physicians report the leukemia has been eradicated.
Following careful monitoring, the patient stopped antiretroviral therapy last summer and has remained in sustained remission to date. Physicians emphasize this extraordinary outcome was an indirect result of treating the cancer and is not a general treatment pathway for HIV. Current antiretroviral medicines already allow people living with HIV to maintain near-normal lifespans, they say, but this case demonstrates that removing HIV from the body is possible.
Experts involved caution that bone marrow transplantation carries significant risks and is not scalable as an HIV cure. Still, the case—one of roughly ten reported worldwide—offers a powerful proof of concept for researchers and underscores the collaborative work at University Health Network, Unity Health Toronto and the University of Toronto.
