A woman from Alamo, Texas, is among the 10,000 people in the state awaiting an organ transplant. Brianna, a 20-year-old single mother, has been battling end-stage kidney disease, with her kidney function currently at just 5%. She was diagnosed two years ago during her second pregnancy when preeclampsia and hypertension severely impacted her kidney health.
Since March of last year, Brianna has been undergoing dialysis three times a week, alongside multiple medications. Despite her condition, she is determined to stay strong for her two daughters. She encourages young people to be proactive about their health and get checked for kidney disease, even if they’re not experiencing symptoms.
The Texas Organ Sharing Alliance notes that the Hispanic population is more genetically predisposed to diseases like diabetes and hypertension, which can lead to organ failure. The average wait time for a kidney transplant can range from several months to five years. Brianna hopes more people will consider becoming organ donors to help those in need.
