Danville Mother’s Son Saved Five Lives Through Organ Donation, Family Urges Registration

USA: During National Donate Life Month, Danville mother Susie Bohannon is renewing a call for organ donor registration after her son Devin was rushed to the ICU on August 1, 2020 and pronounced brain dead. Devin was a registered donor, and his decision set in motion a complex transplantation process that would change five families forever.

Medical teams carried out procurement that enabled transplantation of Devin’s heart, lungs, liver and both kidneys. The five resulting transplants restored function for multiple recipients and illustrated how a single donor can meet several critical needs across the organ transplant system. The family later received letters from recipients and began building relationships with the people whose lives were saved.

Bohannon has maintained contact with the man who received Devin’s heart and says learning about the recipients’ daily lives and goals has been a profound part of the family’s grieving and healing. The experience has reshaped how the family talks about death and donation, turning private loss into sustained advocacy for transplantation and donor registration.

As Donate Life Month spotlights the transplant community, Bohannon’s message is practical and urgent: registering as an organ donor can translate to multiple lifesaving transplants. Her family’s story is being shared as an example of the tangible, long-term impact a single registration can have on recipients and their loved ones.
