Local Mom And Volunteer Photographer Wendy Fleckenstein Credits Second Chance After heart transplant

USA: Wendy Fleckenstein says a heart transplant nearly five years ago gave her a renewed lease on life after a sudden diagnosis of congestive heart failure at age 48. A mother, grandmother and volunteer photographer with the Oshtemo Township Fire Department, she spent six weeks hospitalized between Easter and June 2021 and faced a long fight to regain the strength needed for transplantation and recovery.

The transplanted organ came from a 16-year-old boy who became a donor, and Fleckenstein has maintained written contact with his family, preparing to meet them if and when they are ready. She has kept the transplantation at the center of her recovery narrative, treating the surgery as a solemn promise to honor the donor by living fully: attending her daughter’s wedding and seeing three new grandchildren born have been milestones she attributes directly to receiving a new heart.

Post-surgery life has meant disciplined rehabilitation and routine follow-up. Fleckenstein has worked with the American heart Association on fitness and nutrition, prioritizing daily walking and step goals to stay ready for life’s events. Her care plan includes an upcoming cardiac catheterization this June, when physicians will thread a small tube into her heart to assess how the transplant is performing and guide ongoing management.

Her story is being used to highlight broader concerns about heart disease in women and the distinct ways cardiovascular problems can present. Fleckenstein emphasizes timely medical attention after her own experience of delaying care nearly cost her the chance for treatment. She uses her visibility to encourage vigilance and gratitude around transplantation, underscoring the profound human connection that organ donation creates between families, recipients, and the medical teams who coordinate procurement, transplant surgery, and long-term care.
