USA: County sheriff’s captain Harold Lyles received a life-saving living-donor kidney from his son after a 2018 diagnosis and months of testing and rejected matches left him racing the clock to avoid dialysis. Surgeons removed a cancerous kidney, and Lyles’ urgent goal was to secure a transplant before kidney failure required dialysis.

The late-stage scramble and the surprise live-donor offer a week before his scheduled dialysis appointment illustrate the fragile timelines many candidates face in the transplant system. Lyles’ operation restored kidney function and shifted his prognosis, turning a family crisis into a story of living donation and recovery.

Lieutenant Michelle Price, a colleague and fellow one-kidney survivor, also figured prominently in the local transplant narrative. Price donated a kidney to a coworker in 2017, has contemplated a partial liver donation, and says the experience shaped her commitment to organ and tissue donation and transplantation advocacy.

Now Lyles and Price are teaming up to host a community 5K at Cutler Park on Saturday to raise awareness about organ donation and transplantation. Organizers say the event is intended to honor living donors, educate residents about donation options, and encourage community support for those navigating transplant waitlists and decisions about living donation.
