Three Brothers Celebrate Life After heart Transplants, Urge Organ Donation During National Donate Month
USA: Three brothers from Moline who each received heart transplants are using their near-identical medical journeys to press home the importance of organ donation as National Donate Month approaches. Reporter Marshawn Gunn of WQAD News 8 described how decades and weeks separate their operations but not their gratitude for the chance to live again.
Pete’s health crisis began after a workplace injury led to a prolonged hospital stay and a diagnosis of cardiomyopathy, a heart condition that left him critically impaired. After five months in hospital care he received a donor heart that proved to be an excellent match; he now marks 25 years since that transplantation and credits the operation with restoring his life.
His brothers Rex and Dale faced eerily similar diagnoses years later. Rex learned he had cardiomyopathy at age 67 and feared he might be too old for a transplant, yet he too received a new heart. Dale was told he had only months to live without one; both brothers were transplanted within weeks of diagnosis, a turnaround they call lifesaving.
All three emphasize that their survival depended on donor families and the work of organ procurement teams, and they travel now to spread that message. The Quad Cities community will hear more at the Quad City heart Ball tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. at the Waterfront Convention Center in Bettendorf, where local survivor James Sahara will serve as master of ceremonies.
