Former kidney Recipient Launches Nonprofit To Support Living Donors And Recipients

USA: A former kidney recipient who received a transplant more than a decade ago has launched a nonprofit aimed at increasing living donor support and boosting kidney transplantation rates. The effort comes as roughly 100,000 people remain on the kidney transplant waiting list in the United States, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing, and organizers are using March’s National kidney Month to raise awareness.

He was diagnosed with kidney failure more than 10 years ago, had a young family and, after about two and a half months, received a donor kidney that allowed him to return to his corporate career. He cites family experience β€” his father once donated a kidney and lived into his 90s with one β€” as part of what convinced him that living donation can be safe and life-saving.

The new organization, Kidneys for Communities, grew out of his research into transplant donor-recipient connections and the ways personal stories motivate donors. The group pairs potential living donors with people who have already donated so they can answer practical questions, and it works to cover donor expenses to reduce financial barriers to donation.

Advocates say the initiative is meant to make living donation more accessible and to increase transplantation opportunities for people on waiting lists. For more information about the campaign and resources for prospective donors and recipients, he directs people to the nonprofit’s website.
