Jamal Pedro, an artist and writer, shares a deep bond with his mother, Georgia Anderson, a connection he expresses through poetry. This summer, Anderson required a second kidney transplant, having received the first from her husband nearly 20 years ago. Unsure of asking her family, she sent a message to her two sons, reassuring them there was no obligation.
Jamal responded without hesitation, expressing unwavering devotion. “If you needed my heart, I’d rip that out of my chest,” he declared. He ultimately donated his kidney, describing the experience as a love story deeper than any tattoo. The transplant took place at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where the mother-son duo later spoke to promote organ donation.
Jamal witnessed an immediate transformation in his mother’s health, seeing her regain energy and vitality. Reflecting on the experience, he emphasized the profound impact of living donors. “These are angels who step forward to help another human being who desperately needs it,” he said.
