Two Young Patients Get Camp Inside Hospital While Waiting For heart Transplants

USA: A makeshift pediatric camp has sprung up inside Columbia children’s Hospital, bringing play and structure to two girls who remain on the heart transplant list. Eight-year-old Libby, born with a congenital heart defect and recently affected by multiple strokes that impaired eating and speech, has spent five months in the hospital. Two-year-old Shira has been nearby for weeks, and their proximity prompted the nonprofit Chi Lifeline to convert adjacent rooms into a private, theme-driven “camp” tailored to children facing long waits for donor hearts.

Hospital rooms were transformed into a playground of bumper cars, scooters, an ice cream maker, dance lessons, clown visits and spa days, with scheduled activities that mimic a normal childhood routine. The program’s case worker, Rifka Gordon, described the effort as an attempt to restore the everyday joys of childhood for families whose lives have been consumed by medical care and transplantation logistics. Activities also include hallway races, shared story time and small-group learning so children can keep up with schoolwork while hospitalized.

Libby’s family reports notable gains: improved speech and social engagement since the camp began, and a close, sibling-like bond forming between the two patients as they care for and entertain one another. Shira’s family declined to speak publicly, but staff and Libby’s mother, D’Vorah, say the companionship and specialized programming have eased the monotony and stress of being on the transplant list, giving both girls a sense of normalcy amid uncertainty.

No timetable exists for when suitable donor hearts will become available, and both children remain listed for transplantation. In the meantime, the bedside camp run by Chi Lifeline offers a vivid example of how creative pediatric care and community support can preserve childhood rituals and resilience for patients awaiting life-changing heart transplants.
