Community-Funded Living Donor liver transplant Gives Patient New Time After Rare Cancer

USA: A patient who faced a grim prognosis after a rare liver cancer has won precious time following a living donor liver transplant funded by his community. Quinn Goodman endured numerous surgeries and treatments that left his liver failing; a physician at the Mayo Clinic had estimated he might have roughly a year to live before a transplant could be arranged. His sister, Annie, proved to be a compatible living donor, but their insurance would not cover the nearly $300,000 procedure.

Friends, family, and strangers mobilized to raise the necessary funds, ultimately meeting and exceeding the target that made the transplant possible. Within days of learning the fundraising goal was reached, the siblings entered surgery the following week on Halloween. The decision to proceed crystallized after months of repeated hospital stays and mounting uncertainty about whether he would survive long enough to receive a new liver.

Surgeons performed an 11-hour operation in which roughly 60 percent of the sister’s liver was transplanted. Medical updates in the months after surgery reported substantial regeneration: by about three months both the donor’s and recipient’s livers had recovered to roughly 90 percent of full volume. The recipient awoke from the operation feeling markedly better, beginning a recovery that he describes as a return to life’s normal rhythms and independence.

Four months after the transplant, Goodman is experiencing restored energy and the possibility of returning to school and social life. He still lives with cancer that remains present, but the new liver is not currently limiting his daily activities the way his failing organ once did. The transplant, the living donor’s sacrifice, and the community’s fundraising together transformed a prognosis into renewed hope and more time to pursue recovery.
