East Haddam boy Lincoln Stanger Returns Home After Life-Saving heart transplant

USA: A five-year-old from East Haddam, Lincoln Stanger, has returned to school and play after a dramatic battle that ended in a lifesaving heart transplantation at Boston children’s Hospital. Diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy in 2024 and otherwise healthy as an infant, Lincoln’s condition suddenly deteriorated. He was rushed from Connecticut children’s to Boston in a critical-care ambulance, intubated, placed on ECMO and supported by a Berlin heart while hooked to an IV pole as doctors scrambled to stabilize him.

The medical urgency landed Lincoln on the transplant list as Category One, the highest priority, and his family moved into the hospital for months. They spent roughly ten straight months living at Boston children’s, waiting for the right match and watching Lincoln rebuild strength between interventions. Hospital life revolved around intensive care, rehabilitation and the fragile hope of a donor organ; the family has described the stretch as nearly a year of waiting for that one crucial call.

Last March, that call came. Less than two weeks after being notified that a suitable heart was available, Lincoln was discharged to his Connecticut home and has since made a swift, striking recovery. In the months following transplantation he has returned to school, joined in sports and runs around with his younger sister Haley, resuming the ordinary joys of childhood while his parents manage medical precautions. The family emphasizes the careful step-by-step recovery that followed surgery and the work Lincoln had to do to be strong enough for the operation.

Lincoln’s mother, Ashley, and the family credit the donor and the care team for giving him a new lease on life and say they hope to connect with the donor family through the hospital. They also launched the Love For Lincoln Foundation to give back to other families who have kids waiting for matches, channeling gratitude into support for families navigating the long, uncertain road to transplantation.
