The need to live near the hospital drove him to move quickly when he found a property online, a choice that organizers of his medical care say was driven by the volatility of his health and the demands of ongoing transplantation-related care.

The victim, identified as Tim, located the listing on Zillow and completed a screen-share to receive an electronic door code. He recounts meeting a man in person who handed over keys and garage openers and accepted a cash deposit at the time. Over several transactions, Tim sent roughly $3,100 through the Zelle payment system and an additional $450 in cash; he reports that each payment request arrived from a different phone number or name, complicating attempts to trace the funds.

Shortly after moving in, a representative from Innovation Homes informed him that eviction proceedings would begin, leaving Tim with only $27 and unable to afford essential prescriptions at a nearby Walgreens. He provided the phone numbers used for the payments and called one contact back; that person disconnected the call. Houston police and the victim’s bank are now reviewing the matter as an apparent scam.

The human cost is stark: Tim’s son turned 18 during the ordeal, and family members still returned with a cake to mark the day. Authorities and the bank are investigating, and the case underscores the vulnerability of patients who must remain near specialized hospitals for critical liver care and transplantation-related monitoring while navigating housing needs.
