Zambia Marks World kidney Day, Officials Call For Stronger Screening And Transplant Capacity

WORLD NEWS – ZAMBIA: As Zambia marks World kidney Day at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, health leaders warned that chronic kidney disease remains largely underdiagnosed. Officials noted the condition is often silent in early stages, and many people do not experience symptoms until preventable opportunities to slow progression have been lost.

Authorities said they are intensifying preventive health programs and community-based initiatives to promote early screening and raise awareness of non-communicable diseases, including kidney disease. Healthcare providers, cooperating partners and civil society organizations such as kidney transplant foundations were cited as key to expanding outreach and education.

The conversation also emphasized treatment pathways: dialysis centers, caregivers and clinical staff nationwide form the backbone of current care, while strengthening transplantation services is a priority for long-term outcomes. The ministry of health and partner institutions are working to reinforce healthcare systems so more patients can access timely dialysis and kidney transplant evaluation when appropriate.

Organizers asked families, workplaces and communities to take collective responsibility for kidney health and to support patients and care teams across Zambia. They paid tribute to patients, dialysis staff and caregivers for their dedication, urging continued cooperation to improve screening, treatment and transplantation services countrywide.
