Veteran Denied Heart Transplant Over Refusal to Take COVID Vaccine, Fights for Change

Ken Long, a 54-year-old veteran from Cincinnati, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure nearly a year ago. Despite his critical condition, he was recently informed by Christ Hospital that he would not be eligible for a heart transplant due to his refusal to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Long, who had been on dialysis for some time, has refused the vaccine due to personal concerns about its safety, particularly its potential to cause blood clots and other cardiac issues. These concerns are based on reports of side effects from others who have received the vaccine. Additionally, Long cites his religious beliefs as a reason for opting not to take the vaccine, believing that the long-term risks are not fully understood.

Long’s decision has caused tension within his family. His wife, Christina, initially disagreed with his choice, expressing fear for his life and the health of their family. However, after a period of reflection, she supported his stance, recognizing that it was his personal right to make that decision. Ken now relies on an external device known as an Elad machine, which is a blood pump that helps his heart continue to function. However, this machine comes with its own set of challenges. Ken is concerned about the risk of the device failing in case of a power outage, and he also faces difficulties performing basic tasks like showering.

Despite the option to seek care at a different hospital that may not have the same vaccine requirement, the Long family hopes that Christ Hospital will reconsider their decision and allow Ken to be placed on the transplant list. They are advocating for the hospital to respect Ken’s right to make his own decision regarding the vaccine while receiving the critical medical care he needs. Ken also hopes that by sharing his story publicly, it will encourage hospitals to reassess their policies regarding vaccinations for patients in need of life-saving transplants.
