Family Finds Solace After Teen Talon’s Organ Donation At Strong Hospital Saves Four Lives

USA: A 17-year-old Victor High School student known for a booming tuba and big personality chose to register as an organ donor when applying for his learner’s permit, and his family says that decision brought them a small measure of comfort after his passing. At Strong Hospital, staff and community members lined the trauma wing for an honor walk as his care team prepared for organ and tissue procurement.

Talon’s choice resulted in four people receiving life-saving transplants, and hospital officials note that a single donor can help up to eight lives through organ transplantation while improving scores more through tissue and eye donation. Strong performs roughly 250 transplants a year, yet about 500 patients remain on its active waiting list at any time. Statewide, more than 8,000 New Yorkers await organs, and roughly 800 have been listed for more than five years.

The family said the knowledge that Talon’s organs and tissues would help others eased the grief and gave meaning to the loss. Friends, teammates and teachers joined hospital staff in tribute, and Talon’s mother, Crystal, has met at least one person helped by his donation — an encounter she described as deeply meaningful and grounding.

Organ donation officials urge registration starting at age 16, which can be completed at the DMV, online or by phone at 1-866-NY-DONOR. Donors may specify which organs and tissues to provide; registration is not all-or-nothing and directly supports transplantation, cornea and tissue programs that restore sight and mobility for many recipients.
