Mother And heart Recipient Urge Donor Registration During Donate Life Month

USA: Two women connected by transplantation are using April’s Donate Life Month to press the urgency of organ donation and the lifesaving reach of transplant medicine. They met organizing Donate Life events and now travel together to share how donor organs changed their families’ futures.

Blackmon’s daughter Sofie entered liver failure at just four months old and underwent a liver transplant that suffered complications, sending her back to the operating room a week later for a second liver transplantation. Two donors ultimately made Sofie’s recovery possible; her family says she will be 14 years post-transplant this August. Blackmon went on to organize Donate Life runs and outreach to honor those donors and broaden registrations.

Jessica Fournier, who was 27 when a genetic condition caused her heart to fail, was listed for transplant and received a donor heart six days later. Her rapid placement on the waiting list and successful heart transplantation became a living example Blackmon points to when describing what donation allows families to reclaim.

Together the pair are asking the public to register as organ donors, noting that a single affirmative decision can change a life. Their joint advocacy during Donate Life Month focuses on donor registration, the organ procurement and allocation system, and encouraging conversations within families so more matches can be found for patients awaiting liver, heart and other transplants.
