Maine Officials Mark Donate Life Month As State Sees Record Organ Transplants

USA: April is National Donate Life Month, and New England Donor Services says its network facilitated nearly 1,700 organ and tissue transplants last year, a new high that advocates say underscores the lifesaving impact of donation and transplantation. The milestone will be highlighted in events and outreach across the region this month.

Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and representatives from the Maine Medical Center Transplant Program are expected to speak today on the impacts of organ donation, including how donor procurement, matching and transplantation translate into care for patients awaiting organs. Organ and tissue donation leaders are emphasizing the coordinated work between donor organizations, hospitals and transplant teams.

The surge in transplants reflects both increased donor registrations and advances in transplantation logistics, supporters say. New England Donor Services’ report frames the achievement as part of broader efforts to expand access to transplants, improve donor-recipient matching and shorten waiting times for those with life-threatening organ failure.

Maine residents who want to register as organ donors can do so through the Secretary of State’s website or by visiting a local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office to sign up. Organ donation advocates are using Donate Life Month to urge eligible residents to register and to learn more about how one donor can transform multiple lives through transplantation.
