The simple question offered during license transactions is credited with driving high donor registration rates and creating matches that lead to transplants.

Lafayette resident Pesh Patel, diagnosed with kidney disease in 2017, received his first kidney transplant on August 7, 2018; that graft later failed and he now awaits a second kidney transplantation. Patel and others publicly thanked OMV staff for presenting the donor-registration option, calling it a critical early step in connecting patients to donors and transplant pathways.

Lafayette advocate Hannah Grisco, who now promotes donation, received a kidney from a living donor named Whitney after the donor registered online and completed a matching survey. Whitney’s decision to step forward, undergo evaluation and be present for Grisco’s surgery is cited as an example of how living-donor kidneys can restore patients’ lives and shorten waits on deceased-donor lists.

Advocates note more than 90,000 people in the United States need a kidney transplant, and state data show more than 80 percent of Louisiana donors register through OMV offices. Patel also reconnected with an OMV worker who raised the donor question years ago and says that renewed contact could be part of his path to a new living donor match, underscoring how simple enrollment prompts and community outreach translate into real transplant opportunities.
