New Jersey Lawmaker Seeks April Designation As Donate Life Month After Brother’s kidney transplant

USA: A New Jersey lawmaker has introduced a resolution to designate April as Donate Life Month, citing a deeply personal kidney transplant that reshaped their life and public service. Six years ago the lawmaker received a living kidney donation from a sibling that they say saved their life and gave them the focus and purpose to represent New Jersey residents.

Last year in the state, 351 people made donations of solid organs after their death, a contribution that helped save more than 800 lives. An additional 40,000 people saw significant life changes from tissue and eye donations. Officials say stronger public awareness of donation and the organ procurement process can translate those numbers into more successful transplants and broader benefits for patients awaiting surgery.

The legislator stressed that organ and tissue donation is a complex, deeply personal choice and not the right decision for everyone. They urged families and potential donors to be fully informed about the medical, ethical and emotional consequences and benefits of donation and transplantation, and called for better outreach so next of kin understand options when confronted with those decisions.

By moving the resolution on the Assembly or legislative floor, the sponsor aims to highlight transplantation needs, support donor families and encourage more New Jersey residents to register as organ donors. The measure is intended to boost registration, strengthen coordination with organ procurement organizations and increase public education about life-saving transplants.
