USA: Nebraska Medicine marked the start of Donate Life Month with a flag‑raising ceremony at The Nebraska Medical Center campus honoring organ and tissue donors. The event brought transplant recipients, clinicians and donor family members together to spotlight the impact of organ and tissue transplantation and the donors who make lifesaving operations possible.

Several transplant recipients spoke about their journeys, including a woman who received a liver transplant after being given less than two weeks to live. She credited the staff at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine with rapidly placing her on the transplant list and restoring her life, alongside support from her family, underscoring the human stakes behind every transplant and the coordination required for successful outcomes.

Nebraska Medicine officials noted the program is among the few centers in the country capable of performing all six primary solid organ transplants and reported a record 396 transplants performed last year. The statistic highlights both procedural capacity and the ongoing need for organ and tissue donation to meet patient demand across heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas and intestinal transplantation.

Organ and tissue transplantation remained central to the ceremony’s message: honoring donors, supporting recipients and educating the public about donation. Attendees emphasized continued community engagement to increase donor registration, strengthen procurement and transplant systems, and sustain lifesaving transplant services statewide.
