Young Donor From Celaya Enables Seven Transplants Including National liver Emergency
WORLD NEWS – MEXICO: An 18-year-old from Selaya will give the gift of life to seven patients after his family honored his wish to donate organs and tissues following a skull fracture suffered in a fall at his home. Hospital staff and the state transplant center coordinated rapid procurement and preservation of organs at the Hospital General de Celaya to prepare them for transplantation.
Guanajuato Secretary of Health Gabriel Cortés Alcalá said the Secretaría de Seguridad y Paz arranged the Arcángel helicopter to rush the liver to Hospital General de México in Mexico City, where it will address a declared national urgency. The liver’s roughly six-hour viable window made air transport essential; specialized teams from the Centro Estatal de Trasplantes and participating hospitals maintained the organs’ condition until departure.
Dr. Salvador Martínez Bernal outlined the allocation: the liver for the national emergency at Hospital General de México; kidneys to be transplanted locally at Hospital Pediátrico León and Hospital General de León; corneas at the General de León; and lungs scheduled for transplantation at LMS de Monterrey. Under Mexico’s national urgency protocol, any compatible organ anywhere in the country is prioritized for the most critical patient on the waiting list, which prompted the liver’s transfer.
The state health authority said this was the sixth donation of the year at Hospital Materno Celaya—five multi-organ and one tissue-only—part of a rise in donations after 12 total last year. The donor’s prior conversations with his family about donation ensured his intent to help others was carried out, potentially saving seven lives through transplantation.
