USA: Meadow Bar on Ecorse Road in Taylor has turned a family business into a campaign to connect people on kidney transplant lists with potential living donors. The owners launched a raffle to encourage community members to sign up for donor evaluation and erected a board where those awaiting a transplant can post blood type and the contact information for their transplant center.

Thirty-one-year-old Michael Watkins was diagnosed with kidney disease more than a year ago and has been on dialysis since. He is actively waiting to be matched for a kidney transplant but faces a new complication: a buildup of calcium that could eventually prevent surgeons from connecting a donor kidney to his veins, making time a critical factor in finding a match in the coming year.

The effort taps into a larger statewide need. Gift of Life Michigan reports more than 2,700 people in the state are waiting for a life‑saving organ transplant, and about 86% of those candidates are awaiting a kidney. Meadow Bar’s initiative has prompted many community members to reach out, share donor success stories, and sign up for evaluation as potential living donors.

State protections in Michigan aim to remove financial barriers for living donors: donation should be at no cost to the donor, qualifying expenses may be eligible for a $10,000 tax credit, and health insurers cannot deny coverage because someone has sought donation. A successful kidney transplant for Watkins would mean reclaiming hours now consumed by dialysis and medical appointments.
