Family Bar Hosts Living Donor Drive To Find kidney transplant Match

USA: Meadow Bar in Taylor has become a community lifeline as the family that owns the neighborhood tavern is hosting an event to register potential living kidney donors in hopes of finding a transplant match for 31-year-old Michael Watkins, who has been on dialysis for more than a year. The effort centers on signing people up for evaluation and building connections between donors and transplant centers.

Watkins faces a growing medical complication — a buildup of calcium that could eventually prevent surgeons from connecting a donor kidney to his veins — making a timely transplant urgent. To accelerate evaluations, the family organized a raffle and created a public board at the bar where people on transplant lists can post blood types and the contact information of their kidney transplant centers, offering visibility to many candidates at once.

Organ procurement and transplantation remain in high demand: Gift of Life Michigan reports more than 2,700 people in the state awaiting lifesaving organs, with roughly 86% of those waiting for kidneys. State protections highlighted by organizers aim to reduce barriers for donors, including policies intended to prevent donors from incurring costs and tax credits to offset expenses, along with insurance protections related to donation.

While Meadow Bar’s campaign is focused on finding a match for Watkins, the family emphasizes that registrants could save other lives if they are not a match. Community members can sign up for donor evaluation at the event or register through the Gift of Life Michigan website using the QR code distributed by organizers.
