Jaquez, who spent months unable to sleep, eat or walk, credited the organ donation and the transplant team with changing the course of his illness.

In 2023 doctors warned Jaquez he had only months to live without a transplant. His wife remained at his side through a debilitating stretch of illness that left him weak and hospitalized as clinicians worked to find a match and arrange timely procurement of a donor liver.

A compatible liver became available late in the search and Jaquez went into surgery the same evening; the transplant brought a rapid turn in his recovery. The donor, Armando Olivan, 47, was fatally injured after being thrown from a horse that year. Olivan left a wife, four children and a grandson; meeting his family allowed Jaquez and his loved ones to express their gratitude and acknowledge the profound impact of transplantation on two families.

Medical teams and transplant coordinators said the case underscores how organ procurement and transplantation can deliver second chances. For Jaquez, the reunion with the donor’s family provided a sense of closure and a vivid reminder of the interconnected lives behind every transplant.
