Hospital Marks Donate Life Month After Family’s Multi-Organ And Hand Donation Inspires Community

USA: Helen DeVos children’s Hospital raised the Donate Life flag this April as clinicians, donor families and transplant recipients gathered to spotlight organ and tissue transplantation and to encourage registration. The event put procurement, donation and the impact of transplantation at the center of the conversation for patients, families and staff.

Deborah Wyant — whose daughter Shayna became an organ and tissue donor in 2016 — was highlighted for the family’s decision to authorize procurement of six organs and both hands. Hospital organizers said those gifts later helped three people regain health and provided a hand transplant recipient the ability to feel and perform everyday tasks such as brushing teeth and connecting physically with grandchildren.

Hospital leaders used the occasion to remind the public that a single donor can potentially save up to eight lives through organ transplantation and help many more with tissue donations. Staff described donor registration as simple, often completed when obtaining a driver’s license, and emphasized coordinated work between transplant teams and procurement organizations to honor donor intent and maximize lifesaving outcomes.

Organ and tissue transplantation framed every element of the day’s programming, from family testimonials to outreach about registration. The hospital urged the community to consider donor registration as a tangible way to give purpose from loss and to expand the pool of lifesaving transplants for future patients.
