An ecumenical service sponsored by the Transplant Recipients International Organization (TRIO) and Live On New York brought together nearly 2,000 attendees to honor the gift of life through organ donation. One of the most moving stories shared at the event was from Katrina Erskine, who courageously donated the organs of her five-week-old son, Jaleel, after he tragically passed away in 2000. Her decision saved the lives of two other babies, offering her a profound sense of healing despite her heartbreaking loss.
Katrina spoke about the joy she now feels being able to say her son’s name again and witness the ongoing impact of his legacy. Surrounded by family members, including her father, brother, and two sons, Katrina expressed how her son’s short life continues to bring meaning to others, showing that even in death, one can give the gift of life. Her powerful words resonated with many, demonstrating how organ donation can bring a sense of purpose and hope.
Other speakers at the event included the head of TRIO, who shared his personal story of receiving a liver transplant after a tragic accident. He expressed deep gratitude for the generosity of the donor’s family, whose gift allowed him to continue living. This sentiment was echoed by another speaker, who reflected on how, despite the pain of loss, organ donation offers the gift of life to others and creates lasting connections across communities.
The event also served as a reminder to the audience about the importance of becoming an organ donor, with calls to action encouraging attendees to register and share their wishes with loved ones.
