Valley Center Community Unites As Young heart Donor Enables 11-Year-Old’s Transplant Return To Field

USA: At a packed Valley Center ballpark, 11-year-old heart transplant recipient Luka McDonald of Pennsylvania threw the ceremonial first pitch and met the family of his donor for the first time in person. The donor, nine-year-old Jason Jones, passed away following a medical emergency in 2024; Luka’s arrival and the meeting were the culmination of months of social media connection and community outreach.

Jason’s mother, Jennifer Jones, launched a campaign of painted rocks bearing warm messages and a QR code linking finders to Jason’s story, a project inspired by her son’s love of searching for painted stones. A Valley Center coach who discovered one of the rocks helped draw Luka’s family to town and galvanized local support that made the reunion possible.

Luka’s life was saved by a heart transplant made possible through the procurement of organs after Jason’s passing. Jason’s gift extended beyond Luka: organs were also provided to three other recipients, underscoring the far-reaching impact of organ donation and pediatric transplantation.
