Guyana Mobilizes HLA Testing And International Training To Boost Transplant Capacity

WORLD NEWS – GUYANA: A concentrated effort to build domestic transplant capacity in Guyana is underway, anchored by freshly acquired HLA testing equipment and a push to train local clinicians. Health officials confirmed the necessary laboratory instruments have been obtained and inspected at the National Public Health Reference Laboratory, but emphasized that skilled personnel and interpretation expertise remain the critical missing link for routine HLA testing and transplant support.

To close that gap, authorities have identified a physician who will travel to India in the new year for hands-on instruction at Apollo Hospital in HLA testing and result interpretation. That training is intended to enable HLA assays to be performed in-country upon the clinician’s return, a step described as essential to expanding the national transplantation program and improving compatibility testing for organ recipients.

The program is also deepening international partnerships to broaden clinical experience. An agreement with a donation and transplant institute in Barcelona will allow additional Guyanese doctors to receive further training in Spain, supplementing prior exchanges. Officials have likewise opened channels with a major Brazilian transplant center to expose staff to kidney transplant procedures and other transplant disciplines, creating progression pathways beyond renal services.

Leaders said the goal is to build a trained team across the hospital system, combining new laboratory capacity with overseas clinical fellowships to support current and future transplant activity. By sequencing equipment acquisition, targeted overseas training, and bilateral institutional partnerships, Guyana aims to perform HLA testing at home and expand clinician expertise in kidney transplantation and other potential transplant types while maintaining respect for all patients and staff involved.
