EAGAN, MINNESOTA, USA: In an extraordinary act of altruism and dedication, Dr. Michael Broker, a family physician practicing in Eagan, stands out as one of the scarce number of individuals who have been dual living organ donors. Inspired by his experiences and his patients, Dr. Broker embarked on this journey of life-saving donations, contributing both a kidney and a liver to those in dire need.
Dr. Broker’s initial motivation came during his medical student years when he regularly donated blood and platelets. A pivotal moment arrived when he learned of a kidney donation on social media, prompting him to donate his own kidney to a person in the Twin Cities who desperately needed it. He recounted this decision as a natural step for him, driven by a deep understanding of the impact of kidney disease and the grueling routine of dialysis.
In March 2022, Dr. Broker underwent a laparoscopic-assisted surgery to donate his kidney, demonstrating remarkable resilience by returning to run a marathon just six months post-operation. This was only the beginning of his commitment to organ donation. Later, in August, he became part of Mayo Clinic’s pioneering paired living liver donor program. By donating part of his liver to a stranger, he catalyzed a chain reaction that led to another person’s relative making a similar donation.
Dr. Broker exemplifies the spirit of generosity and health advocacy, encouraging others to consider organ donation. With nearly 90,000 people in the U.S. awaiting kidney transplants and around 10,000 in need of a liver, his efforts and message of hope and healing resonate powerfully across the nation, challenging others to consider contributing to this life-saving cause.
