Movie Theater Ads Help Man Secure Living kidney Donor Through National CineMedia Campaign
USA: Ricky Hernandez, once an active karate competitor, was forced onto dialysis after a sudden diagnosis of kidney disease and urgently needed a transplant. Working at National CineMedia, the cinema advertising company that produces pre-movie commercials, Hernandez and colleagues turned to movie theaters to broadcast his plea for a living kidney donor.
The campaign played in front of captive, phone-free audiences and drove hundreds of inquiries; Hernandez says more than 300 people stepped forward and one moviegoing stranger proved a compatible match. He received a living kidney transplant in February 2016, an outcome that illustrates how targeted outreach can change the course of a transplant journey.
The effort also inspired Atul Agnihotri, who founded the congressionally recognized nonprofit Kidneys for Communities after his own transplant experience. Agnihotriβs organization studies donor behavior and found that a vast majority of living donors give to people they know or strongly identify with, a trend the group believes cinema can influence by connecting patients with communities of viewers.
Advocates now hope National CineMediaβs model can be scaled so more kidney transplant candidates reach potential donors in everyday public spaces. Organ procurement, living donation and transplantation professionals say pairing storytelling with broad public reach offers a new path to increase live donor transplants as Denver prepares to host the Transplant Games.
