Learjet Once Used For Organ Transplants Sunk To Create Underwater Training Site

USA: A retired Learjet that for years ferried organs for transplant patients across the country has been deliberately sunk in a Lebanon County quarry to become part of an underwater training and exploration site. Divers guided the jet into place this week, joining a growing underwater amusement park that already includes school buses, dining room tables and other structures.

The submerged Learjet is intended as a realistic environment where public safety divers and emergency crews can practice underwater rescues, recoveries and investigations. Instructors say the aircraft’s tight corridors and complex layout will help teams rehearse lifting techniques, evidence preservation and scenario-based response under challenging conditions.

The plane’s back story resonates with the transplantation community: it once carried time-sensitive organs and supported organ procurement and transplantation operations nationwide, and it also transported a handful of high-profile passengers during its service life. Repurposing the jet preserves that legacy while offering practical training value for divers who may face comparable confined-space recovery situations in real incidents.

Organizers emphasize that the quarry site serves dual purposes—public safety preparedness and recreational diving—creating a training asset that builds skills and confidence. The Learjet’s new role beneath the waterline transforms a vessel tied to lifesaving transport into a durable classroom for emergency responders.
