Father Heads Home After Nearly Seven-Year Wait For heart transplant

USA: After nearly seven years on the transplant list, Siobhan Busfield is finally leaving the hospital with a new heart. Diagnosed with heart failure a decade ago, Busfield survived on a ventricular assist device implanted in 2019 while he waited for a life-saving heart transplantation at Memorial Regional Medical Center.

His case was unusually complicated, according to his surgical team. Dr. Jose Garcia said Busfield’s large body size, common blood type O and the development of significant antibodies made finding a suitable donor exceptionally difficult; most hospitalized patients receive transplants within weeks or months, but Busfield endured a far longer wait.

Throughout his long stay, Busfield spent nearly three of the past six years inside Memorial Regional, where staff and clinicians became integral to his care. He volunteered to train EMS personnel on managing patients with heart pumps and mentored others facing advanced heart failure, efforts hospital leaders say helped keep community ties strong during an arduous wait.

Now beginning recovery at home, Busfield faces a gradual rehabilitation but describes the transplant as a second chance to rebuild life with his young children β€” dreaming of beaches, swims and everyday milestones he could not safely attempt before transplantation. The hospital plans continued follow-up as he transitions to outpatient care.
