Central Kentucky Woman Waits Nine Months For kidney transplant On World kidney Day
USA: On World kidney Day a Central Kentucky woman who was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure last June marked nine months on the transplant waiting list while continuing dialysis three days a week. The prolonged wait has made transplantation and daily life unpredictable, and the patient’s decline prompted her to seek a compatible kidney.
The 29-year-old turned to social media to tell her story and to look for a living donor, describing dialysis as both physically and emotionally draining. Clinicians say those on dialysis often face fatigue and fluctuating energy, and many patients pursue transplantation as the path to restored health and independence.
kidney disease affects roughly one in seven people, health advocates note, and early testing and awareness are central to better outcomes. Ashley Holt, board chair of the kidney Health Alliance of Kentucky, emphasized that timely screening can identify disease earlier and that patients should advocate for tests that reveal declining kidney function. Holt also highlighted that patients typically experience one of two main dialysis pathways before transplantation.
Experts and patient advocates used World kidney Day to urge increased organ donation, expanded education and faster matching and procurement systems to reduce time on dialysis. They say broader awareness and donor registration can directly shorten waits for transplantation and save lives.
