Ola Verde Initiative Slashes Organ And Tissue Transplant Transport Times

WORLD NEWS – MEXICO: The Estado de México launched a high-speed emergency protocol to transform the way organs, tissues and medical equipment move from donors to hospitals, aiming to cut mobilization times by up to half and boost transplant success. The new operation, named Ola Verde, was inaugurated at Centro Médico Adolfo López Mateos in Toluca and was led by state health secretary Macarena Montoya Olvera alongside Natán Enriquez Ríos, coordinator for IMS Bienestar.

Ola Verde activates the moment a donation is confirmed: the Centro Estatal de Trasplantes del Estado de México immediately determines whether the transfer will be terrestrial or aerial and coordinates ambulances, supplies and personnel. Participating units will display a frontal green light to signal priority passage and streamline routes. Receiving hospitals simultaneously ready surgical teams and verify organ preservation so that organs spend the minimum possible time outside clinical support.

Officials say the program turns every transfer into a timed emergency. Where some routes previously could take up to two hours, Ola Verde aims to reduce those journeys to roughly 30 minutes in many cases. The strategy brings together health services, security, emergency responders, transit authorities, the C5 command center, Protección Civil and the Red Cross under an interinstitutional coordination scheme designed to speed procurement, transport and handoff for transplantation procedures.

The state’s transplant director, Gildardo Cortés Julián, highlighted the hard limits on organ viability — the heart remains transplantable for roughly four to six hours, lungs for four to eight, liver for eight to 12, and kidneys can be preserved up to about 36 hours — underscoring why every minute matters. Authorities noted about 200 people are awaiting transplants in the Estado de México, while national waitlists top more than 19,000 patients. Ola Verde seeks to convert transport into a fast, coordinated race against the clock to raise the odds of successful transplantation and save more lives.
