AdventHealth Program Lets Living Donors Give Now And Secure Later kidney For Loved One
USA: A Denver transplant program is expanding how families move through kidney transplantation by pairing living donors with a national voucher system that lets donors give a kidney when itβs best for them and guarantees a future transplant for a loved one. The AdventHealth Transplant Institute at Porter, working with the National kidney Registryβs voucher program, is offering new flexibility so donors need not be a direct match or wait until a recipient is critically ill to make a lifesaving difference.
Under the registry voucher model, a willing living donor donates a kidney into the registry pool at a time that fits their schedule and health. In return, the intended recipient receives a voucher β effectively a priority pass β that secures access to a compatible kidney through the registry when the recipient later requires a transplant. The approach separates the timing of donation from the timing of need, expanding options for families facing chronic kidney disease.
One local example involved Danny Turner and his wife, Sherry. When Danny needed a kidney but Sherry was not a direct match, she donated to the registry so Danny could receive a compatible organ later under the voucher agreement. The couple reported that the arrangement freed Danny from ongoing dialysis and restored more normal daily life after his transplant, illustrating the practical benefit of synchronized living donor giving and registry allocation.
The program offers two voucher types: a short-term or standard voucher for recipients expected to need transplant within about a year, and a long-term or family voucher that allows a donor to protect up to five family members. In both cases the voucher guarantees registry access to a compatible kidney when the voucher-holder becomes eligible for transplantation, widening pathways for living donors and recipients to coordinate care without waiting for an exact biological match.
