UAB Performs Alabama’s First Deceased-Donor bone marrow Transplant, Expanding Access To Care

USA: Doctors at the University of Alabama Birmingham have performed the state’s first bone marrow transplant using cells from a deceased donor, a development that could widen access to lifesaving transplantation for patients with blood cancers. The team reports using preserved donor cells to create a viable graft when a matched living donor could not be found in time.

Traditionally, bone marrow transplants depend on living donors identified through registries such as the National Marrow Donor Program, and delays in finding a match can be fatal. For patients from diverse backgrounds or with rare tissue types, securing an appropriate living donor often presents a critical barrier to timely transplant therapy.

The new approach leverages preserved cells and protocols for procuring deceased-donor grafts to reduce wait times and offer clinicians greater flexibility in scheduling transplantation. By tapping a broader donor pool, physicians aim to ensure that lack of a living match is not the sole reason a patient cannot receive curative treatment.

While deceased-donor grafts introduce new options, many patients will continue to rely on living donors and registry networks. Transplant teams at UAB emphasize that this method supplements existing pathways to care and could significantly increase timely access to transplantation for those battling blood cancer.
