BORNO STATE, NIGERIA: The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital recently marked a historic milestone by successfully conducting its first kidney transplant, a feat announced by Chief Medical Director Professor Ahmed Aiju. This breakthrough was celebrated in a press briefing, highlighting the significant advancements in healthcare delivery within the region.
The hospital, which had previously attempted kidney transplants since 2010 but faced challenges, has now established a dedicated kidney care center equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. This includes four operating theaters designed specifically for kidney transplants, complete with modern equipment, laboratory capabilities, and endoscopic technologies that enhance surgical procedures.
Teamwork and dedication from the hospital’s medical personnel played a crucial role in the transplant procedure, carried out over the 21st and 22nd of May. The lead surgeon acknowledged the intensive effort required and commended the resources provided by the hospital, underscoring the successful outcome achieved entirely within the institution.
The recipient of the transplant expressed immense gratitude for the care received, emphasizing the life-changing nature of the procedure. Remarkably, this transplant, which would typically cost approximately 13.5 million naira, was performed at no expense to the patient. The hospital has committed to covering the costs for an additional 20 patients, supported by a generous anonymous donor who contributed substantially.
This groundbreaking achievement positions the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital as a beacon of hope within Nigeria’s healthcare system, setting new standards for public healthcare and providing critical support for individuals in need of kidney treatments.
