Neighbor Donates kidney After Years Of Service, Saving EMT’s Life Through Living-Donor Transplant

USA: In the town of Oden, longtime neighbors Nick Woodruff and Greg Clark completed a living-donor kidney transplant after Woodruff volunteered to donate to Clark, an EMT who once helped save Woodruff’s father with CPR. The exchange closed a full circle between two families bound by years of next-door friendship and emergency response.

Ascension Saint Vincent coordinated the medical pathway, guiding both men through the donor evaluation that typically takes weeks and a selection committee review before surgery is scheduled. Because the kidney came from a living donor, Clark received a transplant far sooner than he would have by waiting for a deceased-donor organ.

The transplanted kidney began functioning rapidly, reversing Clark’s renal failure symptoms and shortening his recovery. Hospital staff provided close, familiar care throughout the perioperative period, and both families reported that the experience reinforced the importance of organ donation and the vital role of living donors.

Beyond the medical outcome, the case illustrates how living donation can preserve family life: a father regained more time with his children thanks to a neighbor’s decision. The story highlights the practical and emotional impact of transplantation in small communities, and how one person’s willingness to donate can change another family’s future.
