Gift Of Life Michigan Records Surge In Placenta And Tissue Donations, Boosting Transplant Supply

USA: Gift of Life Michigan, the state’s federally designated organ recovery organization, announced a record-setting year in 2025 as it expanded the pipeline of life-saving transplants and therapeutic tissues. The agency reported helping more than 1,700 people donate tissue, a surge that translated into roughly 1,200 tissue transplants used for bones, tendons, heart valves and other grafts that restore function and save lives. Officials described the milestones as part of a broader effort to increase organ and tissue procurement across hospitals statewide.

A particularly dramatic rise came in placenta donations, with more than 1,400 placentas contributed this year — a new high for the program. Placentas are being processed into grafted tissue intended primarily for wound healing. Those grafts are described as critical tools for clinicians treating stubborn wounds such as diabetic ulcers, where they can reduce infection risk, accelerate closure, and help patients regain mobility and comfort, including the ability to wear shoes and walk more easily.

The work touches a wide range of clinical needs beyond traditional solid-organ transplantation. Tissue donations supported by the organization are finding use in orthopedic repairs, cardiac valve replacement and reconstructive procedures, amplifying the impact of each donor. The placenta program also represents a shift in donor relationships: procurement teams now frequently engage directly with new mothers and their newborns, transforming a moment of new life into an immediate source of healing for others.

Leaders framed the achievements as both a logistical feat and a human story of generosity — thousands of patients benefit from more robust supply chains for tissues and grafts, while families who donate find meaning in contributing to recovery and rehabilitation for strangers. The organization said the uptick underscores the ongoing need for coordinated procurement efforts and community awareness to sustain and grow transplant and tissue availability.
